When giving up isn’t giving up

Most of us are taught from a very young age to never give up. Perseverance is a great principle in many cases, but sometimes our willingness to keep trying is nothing other than the form of insanity that comes with doing the same thing over and over the same way and expecting different results.

So how do you know the difference? How do you know when giving up is giving up and when it isn’t?

Giving up is giving up when you stop because:

  1. It is too hard.
  2. It is taking too long.
  3. You are afraid.
  4. Someone else doesn’t like it.
  5. No one believes in you.
  6. You don’t believe in yourself.

Giving up isn’t giving up when you stop because:

  1. You realize that you are practicing insanity.
  2. You accept that you can not change the situation.
  3. You believe in yourself enough to know that you are doing something for the wrong reason.
  4. You realize that you are not in control of this situation or person.
  5. You are ready to embrace surrender (To relinquish possession or control, to give over or resign oneself to something, to give oneself up – definitions of surrender)

Giving up isn’t giving up when it is surrender. Giving up isn’t giving up when it is acceptance. Giving up isn’t giving up when it is recognizing that you are not the one in control and that the one who is in control can be trusted no matter what. Giving up isn’t giving up when it is giving it to God.

life does what it does

Ask yourself why you are doing what you are doing and whether stopping would be giving up or practicing acceptance.

The next time you find yourself beating your head against the wall, but resisting the urge to give up because you were taught not to, or because it would feel like defeat; ask yourself why you are doing what you are doing and whether stopping would be giving up or practicing acceptance. Ask God for the wisdom to know the difference. Giving up isn’t giving up when it was never yours to do in the first place.
