‘Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance’: So what does he have?

In Matthew 13:12 Jesus says, “Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.

This has always been a puzzling parable and much time has been devoted to study and sermons in an effort to understand. The problem is that when we see ‘much’ and ‘more’ we think of material goods, money, and success. But once again, Jesus was talking about perception:
He goes on to say, “This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: ” ‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.’ “

Jesus was explaining to his disciples why he spoke in parables. He had just told the story of the sower where all the seeds planted failed except for the one that fell on good soil – “But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” – Matthew 13: 12-14, 23 NIV Bible

Just what does ‘he’ have? What is the seed? What is good soil? What is the abundance?

What he has is an understanding of what life is really about. He knows it is not about what you do or what you get. He knows it is about relationship with his creator and all other human beings. He knows that he already has everything he needs to walk through life in the light of love. He knows that what he has is not related to his physical, cultural, social, or financial status.

The seed is the gift of life that the creator wants you to have. The seed alone is viable, but it requires the cooperation of good soil to grow and produce. It is freely given to everyone, but only the seeds planted in good soil thrive.

Good soil is perception. Those who are open to accepting a concept dependent on love instead of material gain, faith instead of fact, relationship instead of competition, have what it takes to grow the seed and reap abundance beyond their wildest dreams.

The abundance is the richness of a life rooted in the ways of heaven; not earth. The abundance is not what you own or how many trips you take or how famous you are. The abundance is a wealth of spiritual gifts that anyone can have; rich, poor, young, old. It doesn’t matter what you have materially. It matters what you have in your heart. If your heart overflows with the love of God, your life will overflow with the abundance God promised.

Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance: just what does he have? He has everything he needs; right here, right now. So do you. You don’t have to see it to believe it. When you believe it you will see it in the form of your own abundant life; right here, right now.

If your heart overflows with the love of God, your life will overflow with the abundance God promised.
