‘For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also’: do you know where your heart is?

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:21 NIV. Look around you. What are your treasures? Look in your purses and wallets. Look at the walls of your home, office, cubicle. Look at what hangs from your rearview mirror and what adorns your bumper.

Look at your bookshelf, CD collection, DVD collection, magazine rack. What other windows are open on your computer right now? What’s in your top dresser drawer, jewelry box, attic, closet? What is on your calendar? What is on your list of priorities for today? What kind of bills are in the bill box?

What are your treasures? Where is your heart? If you have never thought about it before, a list of what you found in the places suggested above should help you to know. Simply put, your treasures are those people, places, things, and thoughts that dominate what you do.

Where is your heart today? Many hearts are in Haiti. Others are working on Human Trafficking. Still others are invested in a cure for cancer. Many hearts are at the center of their family, while others are working for those who have no family. Some hearts are working for community causes. Some are working for a better United States, while others have aimed even higher and are working on a better world.

It’s a good question to ask yourself in the morning before you begin to serve that which you hold dear. What exactly are your treasures? Are they worthy of your time, energy, spirit, and heart? Could you be happy without them?

Jesus also said, “”Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” – Matthew 6:19 NIV  He was talking about the kinds of treasure that also steal your time, energy, spirit, and heart; leaving you with nothing left to serve Him through serving others.

Your heart is in what you do; which is a representation of what you treasure most. Ask yourself today, “What do I treasure?”. Think about what life’s true treasures are. Know where your heart is and who or what you serve.
